9. The Gravedancers (2006)
The Film: Dominic Purcell stars alongside Marcus Thomas and Josie Maran in this nail-biter of an indie horror that reminds us why it is never wise to disrespect the dead. After attending the funeral of a close friend, a trio of twenty-somethings return to the graveyard in a drunken stupor and find what they believe to be a poem on their friend's fresh grave. As drunk people so often do, they decide to sing, though as they stumble around the cemetery belting out the mystery verses, they soon discover that this poem is more of a spell, and the dead don't like what they hear.
What The Rotten Tomatoes Critics Said: Praised for its blend of old-fashioned supernatural tension with contemporary physical horror, The Gravedancers is a film that knows its ghosts and one that has a lot of fun introducing them to you. In fact, Mike Mendez's film is so in-tune with the classic ghost stories of the genre that the shocking opening scene was compared to that from 1977's Suspiria, in appearance as well as in effect. The film plateaus after the intro and slowly the haunting begins, though the somewhat sluggish build-up to the final showdown is done at the perfect pace according to Rotten Tomatoes reviewer R. L. Shaffer:
"Just when you think the film is about to run out of steam, it picks up the pace and surprises you. It's not for everyone, to be sure, but it works in its own unusual way."
