Despite Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man trilogy ending on such a sour note with Spider-Man 3, much of the character's fan base struggled to let go of Tobey Maguire, and refused to accept Andrew Garfield as their new Peter Parker.

The Amazing Spider-Man movies weren't inherently bad, but they certainly didn't live up to what a good Spidey movie could be. Retreading old ground with the Green Goblin in the second movie, paired with the questionable at best casting of Dane DeHaan, went towards the movie's disappointing reception. It's even harder to watch now after seeing what Marvel Studios and Tom Holland have created.

One thing this iteration of the franchise did differently was to focus on Peter's relationship with Gwen Stacey rather than with Mary Jane. As soon as this was revealed, fans of the comics knew what to expect. After all, The Night Gwen Stacey Died is one of the most famous Spider-Man stories.

Gwen's death in the movie was like it had literally been lifted out of the pages of a comic book, even down to the sickening 'snap' that makes you shudder every time you watch it. It's an incredibly tense scene, and possibly the best the Amazing Spider-Man franchise has to offer.
