5. Malcolm X (Malcolm & Betty)
Regardless of how their meeting and subsequent wedding are portrayed in this movie, the relationship between Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz is an incredibly powerful thing. So much love and warmth emanates from the screen in the time both Angela Bassett and Denzel Washington take in their scenes together, and the cinematography of Ernest Dickerson and directing by Spike Lee make it even more potent. Through their life together, Malcolm and Betty explore the reality of many of the problems Malcolm speaks about and works to solve, in all of its complexities. It's heavy material that has so much life behind it, and it's just captivating.
