12 Great Soundtracks In Otherwise Terrible Movies

8. Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit (1993)

The Greatest Showman Hugh Jackman
Touchstone Pictures

The second Sister Act movie was never destined for success. It was made on a shoe-string budget and produced as quickly as possible to piggyback on the popularity of the first movie.

The first film may not have been Oscar-worthy but it was feel-good, well aware of its cheesiness, with a simple but straight-forward plot to it. And all of the songs, whether gospel, motown or pop, were all thoroughly enjoyable and kept the story going at a nice pace.

Sister Act 2, on the other hand, somehow feels really rushed in its pacing and yet, the plot doesn’t really get going until the last thirty minutes. The movie is solely built on clichés and you can see the ending coming way before it actually happens.

Rather than a group of nuns, it offers us a brand-new ensemble of characters within the rebellious class of school children, who are all very one-dimensional with lots of their personality traits based on one characteristic.

With all that said, the music is amazing and, in some ways, better than the original.

Whoopi Goldberg absolutely kills the “Get Up Offa That Thing/Dancing in the Street” medley, and the school group’s version of “Oh Happy Day” is pure delight (not to mention that impressive E natural high note achieved by a young Ryan Toby).

There is also a gorgeous duet of "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" sung by Tanya Blount and Lauryn Hill and a fun rendition of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” over the end credits.

The absolute greatest number of all, the best out of both films – "Joyful, Joyful". It’s a hymn but remixed with a refreshingly modern, upbeat flavour to it. It starts off with a beautiful solo from the soulful voiced Lauryn Hill.

One minute in and things get taken up a gear as the whole choir joins the stage to give a vibrant, lively performance which remains unforgettable. As the film ends with a bang, it just about makes the whole ordeal worth watching.
