12 Great Soundtracks In Otherwise Terrible Movies
9. Glitter (2001)
A lot of the films in this selection might be bad but Glitter is on a new level of awful. It is considered one of the worst movies of all time ever and is without a doubt the lowest point in Mariah Carey’s career.
As it was released in late September 2001, Mariah often likes to blame the 9/11 attacks for playing a part in the film’s failure, seemingly ignoring the quality of the film itself. It currently sits at a 2.2 rating on IMDB, which is a big achievement for all the wrong reasons.
Where to begin with this monstrosity? Often called a cheap rip-off of “A Star Is Born”, Glitter is a story about an aspiring artist who finds herself in a relationship with a disc jockey.
He helps her into the music industry and to no one's surprise, whilst she continues to rise in stardom, her relationship faces some turbulent issues. The cinematography is ugly and makes no artistic sense, as if somebody was experimenting with brand new editing equipment and accidentally left it in the final cut.
There is not one decent acting performance to be found across the ensemble. The script is underdeveloped and badly written. It’s as if the film was deliberately trying to win all the Razzie awards.
So, what does Glitter have going for it? A whole soundtrack, mostly produced and performed by Mariah Carey – one of the greatest female vocalists of all time. That’s it.
Of all the entries on this list, this is the only one where you should just listen to the music separately and not bother with the film that accompanies it.
