12 Greatest Horror Films Of The Last 5 Years
6. Goodnight Mommy (2014)
Hailing from Austria, Goodnight Mommy is written and directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala and is without a doubt one of the most colourful horror films in recent memory. The plot revolves around a pair of twin boys who move into a new home with their mother who has recently underwent some sort of cosmetic surgery, leaving her face wrapped in bandages.
Throughout the story we're given very little context, creating mysteries which contribute to the film's palpable sense of dread. Who exactly are these people? Is that woman really the kid's mother? And what sort of surgery did she get?
What's especially refreshing about Goodnight Mommy is the way it finds fear in modernity. We're so used to dark, grimy settings and creaking, cavernous houses in horror, but Mommy is the complete opposite: its world is slick and chrome. The setting is so alien to the genre that its unfamiliarity is unsettling.
