12 Greatest Horror Films Of The Last 5 Years
5. A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014)
You'd be forgiven for thinking that the vampire genre is totally played out at this point, and that there hasn't been much of worth contributed since 2008's Let The Right One In. If that's the case then you clearly haven't seen 2014's A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, the Persian-language American horror film directed by Ana Lily Amirpour.
Set in the Iranian ghost-town Bad City, the various inhabitants are unaware they're being stalked by a lonesome vampire, played by Sheila Vand. Vand's performance is one of the best things about the movie; it's simultaneously hypnotizing, exotic, and downright creepy.
What's most striking, however, is the film's aesthetic: shot completely in black and white, there's an eerie, ethereal tone that is only heightened by the constant use of strong lighting. Even just watching Vand's vampire stalk the streets at night conjures up a disconcerting feeling.
