12 Greatest Monsterverse Movie Moments (So Far)

4. Godzilla - The Battle of San Francisco

King Skull Island
Warner Bros. Pictures/Toho

Given the slow-burn approach that this film adopted, it did need to conclude with an explosive finale in order to pay off. Luckily, it did. Big time.

The finale of Godzilla features two very stressful situations. Firstly, Godzilla is fighting with two MUTOs and secondly, Ford Brody is trying to defuse a nuclear bomb that is about to destroy the entire city.

As a result, the finale is able to provide both a thoroughly suspenseful ticking-clock climax and some absolutely glorious fighting between Godzilla and the MUTOs - complete with Godzilla breathing fire. It's a superbly-rounded ending that allows the film to end with style.

Additionally, at the end it really feels like Godzilla - who hadn't appeared in a movie, Japanese or American, for ten years - has fully returned to his former glory. You love to see it.
