12 Greatest Monsterverse Movie Moments (So Far)
5. Godzilla - The Bridge
This set-piece, in which a military train is attacked by a MUTO on a bridge, is a combination of many of Godzilla's greatest strengths.
The MUTO looks great thanks to the terrific visual effects, the slow-building tension throughout this sequence is enormously effective and Gareth Edwards' patient, suspenseful direction is legitimately brilliant.
In particular, when protagonist Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and another soldier are lying on the bridge (which they had gone ahead to inspect) and trying not to be noticed by the MUTO, who is incredibly close to them, you might forget to breathe.
The sequence's ending is also especially memorable. The MUTO vanishes into the fog, some screams are heard and after a few beats, the military train races towards Ford - in flames.
The way in which Ford survives jumping off the bridge into the river below is a bit silly, but other than that this is another excellent Monster-Verse action scene.
