12 Hidden Horror Movie Gems Of The Last Decade

9. The Void

Coming out of Canada in 2017, The Void is something of a throwback to the horror movies of decades past, heavily inspired by the likes of John Carpenter, and making use of practical effects rather than CGI. Not only does the movie favour the old fashioned way, it focuses it front and centre for all to see.

As if entranced cultists, flayed faces and a bizarre tentacled human corpse weren't creepy enough, the movie takes place in a near abandoned hospital. After Deputy Sheriff Daniel Carter rushes James to the hospital when he finds him crawling along the road, all hell breaks loose within the confined space of the hospital.

There is no straight forward story to be told in this movie, no slow build up, and no thought provoking message on the journey to a big payoff at the end. From the very start, right to the end, The Void is full of unapologetic violence, insane gore, and absolute craziness.

It is the pure nostalgic element that helps lift The Void above the rest, as a gentle reminder of what the industry was like before the introduction of CGI.
