You didn’t think we’d make it to the end of this list without including at least one classic sixties sci-fi, did you? This one is a dark morality tale from The Manchurian Candidate helmer John Frankenheimer, starring Hollywood icon Rock Hudson as Tony Wilson, the “reborn” iteration of a beleaguered middle-aged man who opts out of his humdrum existence in favour of a new life.

The flick plays out like a classic Twilight Zone instalment, complete with a killer karmic twist ending, and its influence can be seen as recently as Netflix’s Paul Rudd vehicle Living With Myself. But the real life subtext of star Rock Hudson’s own double life lends what is an otherwise stylized nightmare depth and poignancy, and the resulting film is potent enough to have driven Beach Boy Brian Wilson away from cinemas for over a decade when he unwittingly wandered into a screening high on acid, only to be greeted by a voice intoning “Welcome to your procedure Mr. Wilson”.

Here’s hoping your viewing experience is a little less scarring.
