12 Hidden Sci-Fi Movies You've Probably Never Seen

1. Grabbers

Grabbers (2012)
Element Pictures/Sony Pictures

Another genre hybrid, and this time it’s a sci-fi horror comedy courtesy of the emerald Isle, i.e the only nation which could come up with a conceit as ingenious as that of 2012’s Grabbers. The flick follows a handful of colourful inhabitants holed up on a remote island off the coast of Ireland who are attacked by mysterious alien creatures with an, er, unusual weakness.

Yes, unlike M Night Shyamalan’s infamous water-phobic extra-terrestrials, these tentacled beasts are allergic to alcohol, meaning the cast of offbeat locals are forced to stay sozzled in order to fend them off. What follows is a mile-a-minute barrage of quirky comedy, surprisingly solid monster actions, and an adorable romance amid a monster movie which gives Lake Placid a run for its money. The flick is a superb reminder of where a spot of inventive thinking can make up for an undersized budget, and its success is a testament to the potential of sci fi to merge with many genres in pursuit of an original cinematic experience.
