12 Hidden Sci-Fi Movies You've Probably Never Seen
5. The Crazies
George A. Romero’s 1973 original is almost forgotten enough to warrant an entry in this list, and it is easily as good as its 2010 remake. However, we’re spotlighting the remake solely because it came from the lens of much-maligned director Breck Eisner, whose ignoble attempts at cinematic immortality include the likes of 2005 flop Sahara and 2015 flop The Last Witch Hunter.
We figured it was only fair to give him credit where its due, and it is overdue for this intense, high-octane sci-fi thriller which follows the spread of an epidemic through the small town of Ogden Marsh. The unfortunately very topical material is handled with care as the film combines terrifying zombie action with thoughtful, incisive satire of post 9/11 American both through the pre-epidemic denizens of the town and through the eventual military reaction to the epidemic.
The earlier effort The Mist may get all the cult film love, but The Crazies has a lot to say about the military, America, patriotism and the politics of fear in the twenty first century. Not bad for a simple sci fi.
