10. Where Did Aldo Raine's Scar Come From? - Inglourious Basterds

Traditionally, in a Quentin Tarantino movie, you can expect every character to have a complex backstory and possibly even ties to existing characters in other Tarantino movies. They're all woven into the intricate fabric that we know underpins all of his works and it's weird to see anything in one of his films that isn't defined precisely.

He also loves a flashback that builds up the mythology of his characters, which is why it's so weird that Inglourious Basterds' First Lieutenant Aldo Raine has a great big unanswered mystery literally written across his face. Well, his neck, at least.

When we meet him, it's immediately obvious that someone has tried - unsuccessfully - to kill him by slitting his throat. It's the kind of thing that establishes very quickly that he's a badass not to be messed with, but it's also the kind of detail that surely demands explanation. How the hell could he have survived that and wouldn't it be good to find that out to make him even cooler?
