12 Huge Movie Mysteries That Are Still Unsolved

9. How Did They Get Out? - The Italian Job

Say what you want about cliffhanger endings, but there are none that fit the definition and also the literal meaning of the word quite like the end of The Italian Job.

Now arguably more notorious than any of the film's other narrative details, that final moment sees Michael Caine's gang perched precariously over the end of a cliff as their haul of four million dollars in gold bars threatens to tip them over the edge. There follows the famous "hang on, lads, I've got a great idea" before the movie ends audaciously.

Knowing how ingenious Caine's Croker is, you have to suspect that he does manage to get them out of there, but it's such a compelling "HOW" moment that you really want to know the specifics. Caine has since revealed that a more conclusive ending was filmed, which sees Corker free his friends and lose the gold to set up a sequel, but it was never used.

In this sort of case, admittedly, the mystery is probably better than any answer.
