12 Huge Movie Mysteries That Are Still Unsolved
6. Was Patrick Bateman Actually A Killer? - American Psycho (2000)
Patrick Bateman's hellish crimes in American Psycho aree horribly compelling to watch - particularly because Christian Bale is so irresistibly watchable as the titular American Psycho. In his hands, the cold, staggeringly bloody violence that Bateman reaps is completely convincing: he's disconnected, terrifying and monstrous under his seemingly normal surface and it's no stretch to believe that he's a killer.
But then by the end of the movie, it's revealed that Bateman's crimes seem to be a fantasy. So vague is the "twist" at the end as Bateman's mind spirals out of control that the audience has absolutely no idea of what is real and what is fantasy.
He's definitely unhinged and he's definitely capable of those crimes, but imagining them and carrying them out are different things and the strange rampage he goes on at the end - including his encounter with the talking ATM - seems to suggest it's all fantasy but the rest of the film seems incredibly realistic. In the end, it seems that us NOT knowing is precisely the point.
