8. Man Of Steel
Box Office: $668 million It's Superman, for Christ's sakes! One of the most iconic and best-loved superheroes in history was grittily rebooted by Zack Snyder, and whether due to the darker tone or some of the movie's contentious plot elements, Man of Steel was viewed as a financial disappointment despite being an evident success. Warner Bros were likely hoping for something closer to Christopher Nolan's Batman figures (at least $800+ million) as the movie replicated a similarly serious mood, but instead it had to settle for merely satisfactory, allowing Deadpool to sail cleanly past it without a care in the world. There's a lot to be said for audiences favouring lightness over grim seriousness (just look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe's $1.5 billion success with The Avengers), and despite its inherent sadism, this is where Deadpool won out big. The humour just happened to be of the R-rated variety.
