Suicide Squad was a major box office success, no doubt aided by it following on from Batman v Superman's disappointment and basically promoting itself as the fun, ensemble-led effort that its predecessor wasn't.

As it turned out, Suicide Squad wasn't very good either, but that did little to stop it pulling gangbusters business with audiences, with its cartoonish tone and excellent central performance by Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

Even she was no match for Diana, though, which is especially impressive considering Wonder Woman's less-edgy, teen-friendly tone, lesser focus on sexualising its female protagonist, and the war-time setting which is always a "boring" proposition for many younger viewers.

It seems that audiences were compelled to support a more positive depiction of a cinematic heroine, and the rest, as they say, is history.
