12 Huge Questions About 2014's Biggest Movies

4. Can It Top The Lego Movie? €“ How To Train Your Dragon 2

It's a bit premature to start talking about the 2015 Oscars in any serious way, but the dialogue moving forward for the Best Animated Film race has clearly been about The Lego Movie vs. How to Train Your Dragon 2. The Lego Movie released this past week to tremendous critical acclaim and a strong box office, all-but guaranteeing that it'll be the best animated film of 2014, and as long as the old boys' club of the Oscars don't turn their noses up at a movie about Lego, it'll almost certainly win the Oscar. But How to Train Your Dragon is still 4 months away, by which point the excitement about Lego will have died down somewhat (though interestingly, that June 13th release date is roughly when The Lego Movie will hit home video, I expect). The first movie confounded expectations to deliver a heartfelt, thrilling adventure that was more on par with Pixar's better efforts than what we usually expect of Dreamworks. Everything we've seen of the sequel suggests it'll build on what we've seen, so perhaps we shouldn't declare the race won so hastily.
