12 Incredible 2013 Performances That Definitely Won't Win An Oscar
4. Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha)
Noah Bumbach's Frances Ha was one of the surprise movie of the year, premiering to raves at the Telluride Film Festival, and ending up one of the most acclaimed films of the year. And one of the biggest factors in the film's reception was the brilliant performance in the main role by breakout star, Greta Gerwig. She plays the archetypal twentysomething trying to find her way in New York City who moves in and out of apartments, alternates between jobs, and forms new circles of friends regularly. She bumbles her way through relationships with the people around her before finally learning how to accept herself for who she ends, and the movie ends with her finally beginning to enjoy life. Gerwig delivers one of the best performances of the year, carrying the movie over large portions. Although she was nominated for a Golden Globe in the role, and will likely earn an Oscar nomination, Frances Ha is too obscure of a movie for her to have a real chance at winning. Still, Gerwig's future is bright and Frances Ha will likely become something of a modern classic and her performance is a big reason why.
I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
