12 Incredible 2013 Performances That Definitely Won't Win An Oscar
3. Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station)
Another one of the breakout stars of the year was Michael B. Jordan, who surprised everyone with his heartbreaking turn in Ryan Coogler's Fruitvale Station. Playing the real life character of Oscar Grant, Jordan turns him into a flawed, fascinating figure, with his own particular set of motivations, dreams, hopes, fears, and longings. The best performances make their characters come to life, and Michael B. Jordan more than accomplishes that feat, and his Oscar Grant is one of the year's most interesting characters. The role was specifically written for Jordan, and it's easy to see why as he encapsulates so well the conflicting emotions that define the character. His performance ties the whole movie together, and few actors of any age could bring the same combination of charisma and pathos to the role as Jordan did. Although the competition is going to be too much for him this year, Jordan is one of the rising stars in Hollywood, and it's very likely that he'll eventually win an Oscar, just not this year.
I love movies, literature, history, music and the NBA. I love all things nerdy including but not limited to Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and Firefly. My artistic idols are Dylan, Dostoevsky, and Malick and my goal in life is to become like Bernard Black from Black Books. When I die, I hope to turn into the space baby from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
