10 Incredible Movies With TERRIBLE Villains
8. Zorg - The Fifth Element
Don't worry. There's no issue with Gary Oldman's performance in The Fifth Element (even though the Oscar-winning actor isn't a fan of Luc Besson's sci-fi blockbuster himself.) In fact, Oldman's portrayal of Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg is one of the film's highlights.
The problem lies with the character itself. Oldman has a ball chewing everything in sight but it doesn't change the fact Zorg is a bit of a wimp. His conflict with the hero, Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), is barely explored since they never meet each other. In fact, Zorg never learns of Dallas' existence.
Although The Fifth Element embraces campiness, Zorg's wacky appearance and cartoonish persona makes it impossible to take him seriously, (especially after he's nearly killed by a cherry).
Though he believes he's the top dog, the megalomaniacal industrialist is nothing more than a glorified flunkey, since he's merely carrying out the orders of an evil planet. (Yes, he works for a planet.) Also, his motivation is bare-bones. He wants to destroy the world because he finds peace boring. That's it.
If it wasn't for Gary Oldman's star power and staggering talent, this goofy character wouldn't have worked at all.
