12 Incredibly Successful Movies (That Nobody Likes)
9. Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Gross: $1,045,713,802
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was a huge success against the odds and its sequels were both the highest-grossing films of their year; the reaction to Dead Man's Chest and At World's End was mixed, but that didn't deter audiences and this was another absolutely huge hit.
Dead Man's Chest and At World's End aren't as bad as you might remember, but with On Stranger Tides even the loyalest fans largely lost patience. It's supposed to be a witty and fun adventure story, but it's only ever a bloated, flat and surprisingly dull blockbuster. Even though the bland pairing of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley were jettisoned, this does still completely waste new leads Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane, so the film didn't exactly offer a great alternative.
As for Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow, at this point his routine had grown pretty tired and even he's not nearly as fun to watch anymore.
All in all, for a film featuring pirates, psycho killer mermaids and the fountain of youth, this is a colossal bore.
