12 Insane Documentaries Way Stranger Than Fiction
11. Voyeur
A seemingly normal Colorado motel is found to be anything but when it is revealed that specially designed ceiling vents and peepholes were created to allow the owner to watch over his guests as they went about their business.
The owner of the motel, Gerald Foos, peered at his guests for decades and kept notes on their activities, from the bland to the disturbing. Journalist Gary Talese published some of his documents in the New Yorker in 2016.
The relationship between Talese and Foos is a large part of the ‘Voyeur’ documentary as both men seemingly compete with each other to be the star of the show. Not that either man has anything to brag about in regards to their involvement in the case.
Foos refers to his voyeurism as “research” and was often encouraged by Talese, who seemed perversely excited, during his own investigation into the motel. By the end of the documentary you will have an insight into a disturbing way of living but you, the viewer, will also feel a bit dirty just for watching the film.
