12 Key Influences In Batman Begins

7. Gotham City Monorail

Batman Begins is the first Batman movie to introduce a monorail to Gotham City, a gift from Bruce's father Thomas Wayne to the city, and one that Ra's al Ghul later plots to destroy at the film's climax. Nolan almost certainly cribbed this visual from the very first panel of Frank Miller's fantastic Batman: Year One, and though the comic itself doesn't do anything plot-wise with the monorail, it surely gave Nolan the inspiration to come up with that concluding set-piece between Batman and Ra's. Strangely, despite only a relatively isolated part of the track being destroyed in Batman Begins, the monorail is conspicuously absent throughout both of Nolan's sequels.
