12 Key Influences In Batman Begins

6. Jim Gordon

The James Gordon (Gary Oldman) seen in Nolan's movies has brown hair, a thick moustache and glasses, and is often seen wearing a trenchcoat. This is in opposition to the typical comic book conception of the character, who traditionally had silver hair, and was portrayed as such by Neil Hamilton in the 1960s Adam West-starring Batman TV series. However, Nolan wasn't just being contrarian for the sake of it (which the previous Burton/Schumacher Batman films arguably were, given that Pat Hingle's overweight, brown-haired, non-glasses-wearing Gordon was so different from any comic iteration). In fact, his Gordon is a dead ringer for the version from Year One, and many fans have noted how uncannily similar the two are. Given that the portrayal of Gordon is easily one of the series' most successful elements, it was a great idea to lean into Miller's superb vision of the character and bring it to a much larger audience.
