8. The Report

You absolutely love to see a tense, heavy-hitting political drama with awards credentials at the end of any year and while The Report is coming thanks to Amazon (and will be sneered at by pedants and "purists"), there's a distinct whiff of the Oscars about it. If it's allowed to qualify.

From screenwriter Scott Z. Burns (who also partly wrote the new Bond), The Report has a frankly ridiculous cast headed by Adam Driver and tells the story of Daniel J. Jones and the Senate Intelligence Committee investigation into the CIA's use of torture following the September 11 attacks.

It's likely to be a slow-burning tinder box of a movie marked by great performances and it's absolutely one of the most important films coming at the tail-end of 2019.
