12 Lesser Known Fall Movies You Should Be Excited About

1. Sisters

Bryan Cranston Trumbo
Universal Pictures

Release date: December 18 (US) / March 11 (UK)

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler couldn't be more perfect together, as proven by the Golden Globes, Baby Mama, and literally every other time they've appeared on screen as a duo. Sisters is shaping up to be another hilarious paring of two of the funniest women in comedy right now. Fey and Poehler play Jane and Maura, two sisters who decide to throw one last party at their parents' house before it's sold.

It's got a bunch of Saturday Night Live veterans like Kate McKinnon, Maya Rudolph, and Bobby Moynihan, and the movie was actually written by Paula Pell, an SNL writer since 1995. This is her first feature film, and based on the trailer it does essentially look like one long sketch. Hopefully Sisters puts effort into developing the characters beyond just the jokes, but considering Pell's experience working with Judd Apatow on Bridesmaids and This is 40, that shouldn't be an issue.

There's one problem with this movie, though: in the U.S. it comes out on the same day as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, meaning approximately nobody on Earth will be seeing it that weekend. This might be one to check out in between your fourth and fifth viewings of Episode VII as a nice palate cleanser.
