12 Live-Action Anime Projects You Didn’t Know Were Happening
9. Your Name
Everyone is familiar with the trend of body swap movies, as popularised by the likes of Freaky Friday. It's a harmlessly fun subgenre that doesn't often do anything profound. Well, except maybe in the case of Makoto Shinkai's Your Name.
This anime movie turns the idea of strangers swapping bodies into a breathtakingly romantic and emotional experience. More so than that, the film was also a substantial financial/critical success. Do you know what happens when Hollywood sees something like that? They start frothing at the mouth at the thought of adapting it.
As it currently stands, the project is having trouble finding its director. Marc Webb was initially slated for it and was eventually replaced by Lee Isaac Chung. Unfortunately, both of them ended up leaving the project. Despite that, the screenplay (from Eric Heisserer) is still out there, waiting for the right person to take charge.
If it does go ahead, viewers can expect an entirely different experience, as the film would be an Americanised remake from the perspective of a Native American girl. A new perspective and a possible tonal switch. Let's see how this one pans out.
