Because Ned Leeds is such a good friend to Peter Parker, you'd never suspect he's linked with the Hobgoblin. Although comic fans know Robert Kingsley is the official Hobgoblin, Ned was the first person to be unmasked in this persona.

I know what you're thinking. "Just because Ned Leeds was the Hobgoblin in the comics doesn't mean his live-action counterpart will turn out the same way, right?"

Well, here's the weird thing. The movie version of this character seems to be directly based on Ganke Lee, who is Miles Morales' best friend in the comics. Both characters are Asian-American and have the same relationship with Spider-Man. On top of that, they're both obsessed with Lego!

Despite the fact this version of Ned is clearly modelled of Ganke, the writers deliberately changed his name to Ned Leeds. Because of this, many fans assumed he would become Hobgoblin in a future movie or have some direct connection with the maniacal supervillain. (This theory gained traction when Ned told Peter in Spider-Man: No Way Home how there could be a reality where he's Spidey's enemy.) Although this has yet to happen, this concept could be incorporated into future Spider-Man instalments.
