Guardians Of The Galaxy spent a lot of time on Peter Quill's backstory, showing him spending decades struggling to come to terms with his mother's death before finding some solace by way of Marvin Gaye. But there is, of course, another side to that whole "kid runs away and is never seen again" story; we may not see the Quills after the pre-studio logos sequence, but you can be sure quite a bit of drama happened in the aftermath of lil' Pete's abduction. It may be too heavy/not thrilling enough to dedicate a lengthy part of a Guardians movie to Star-Lord dealing with his Earth-bound past, especially given how everything with Volume 2 is looking towards the sci-fi side of his origins, but some reference to how Peter Quill is still missing, be it in a Guardians movie or in the background of another, would be a nice touch. There's numerous ways this could be neatly pulled off too. You could have a report show up in the background in a flashback set around 1988 (while that sounds unlikely, considering that the last seven movies have used flashbacks/visions, including Ant-Man's in 1989, it's actually rather possible) or some later news item on how the case is still unsolved; just something that tells us the Quills didn't shrug off Meredith's son disappearing minutes after her death.
