I like to starve myself: it keeps the fear up. - Nick
If Christopher Walken seems a little old and scary to you now then don't worry, he's timeless that way. Don't get me wrong, love Walken, amazing method actor. His being in movies has often brightened my day, but even in 1978's The Deer Hunter, young Walken still looked creepy. His character in that film, Nick, doesn't make for a strong case to join the army either. He is the sad example of a soldier that faces something so awful that he never mentally recovers enough to regain his humanity and join society. After being captured by the Viet Cong and forced to play Russian Roulette for his captors enjoyment Nick picks up the sport for real in Saigon becoming something of a star in the seedy underground world. You know when you've decided to start wrapping your head in a red cloth and pressing a barrel against it for a living that you've been through some stuff. I like to think that Walken's character in The Deer Hunter actually survives the shot in the head and lives to carry Butch his dad's gold watch to him in Pulp Fiction, but I know that's just silly.
