12 More Film Characters Whose Deaths Came Out Of Nowhere

5. Julian (Children of Men)

julai Julianne Moore's death in Children of Men came as one of the biggest shocks on this list. Introduced as the ex-wife of protagonist Clive Owen, her back story comes across as both chilling and intriguing. The information we are privy to in her short time on screen, suggests a divorce between the two as a result of their child's death. It only begins to flesh-out before she is shot by a rebel gang that ambush the car carrying herself, Owen and the last pregnant woman on Earth. It's an impossibly difficult scene to shoot. Alfonso Cuaron (of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban fame) has the camera placed in the center of the car, rotating it 360 degrees for about 4 minutes, as the drama and the action unfolds both inside and outside of the moving vehicle. The camerawork, as well as the small confines of the setting, add to the claustrophobia surrounding her death. It comes as such a shock due to the seemingly unfinished nature of her character arc. In any other film, it would have been a happy-ever-after for her and Owen, but alas, this is not 'any other film'. Children of Men is a gritty, depressing yet beautifully hopeful film that explores the endurance of the human spirit! From the go, Cuaron holds nothing back. He provides and assault on the senses both visually and emotionally in this dystopian world that he has created. Moore's death is just another in a long list of unfortunate events the director forces the audience to overcome.
