4. Lt. Archie Hicox (Inglorious Basterds)

Quentin Tarantino's epic WWII romp threw plenty of surprises at us (the Americans obliterating Hitler's face in a blood induced moment of pure overkill being one of them!) . However for me, one of the most distressing moments in the entire film, was coming to terms with the fact that Michael Fassbender and co, were truly dead. It followed a lengthy scene in which a tense game of 'stick the post-it on your forehead and try and guess who are' was being played enthusiastically by a high-ranking Nazi, during a rendezvous between British and American intelligence and a glamorous, German movie-star snitch, in an underground bar, somewhere in occupied France. Classic QT right? Right. The talky dialogue and brilliant use of subtitles results in an agonizingly drawn out battle of wits. After fifteen minutes of titanic mind games, one German has his gun stuck in the crotch of another German whilst the Brit downs his last glass of fine scotch. Cue, fifteen seconds of an all-out shoot em' up! Some could argue that these deaths do not come out of nowhere, due to the lengthy, drawn out scene that came before it. However I would counteract (and I'm confident many people think the same) and say that you still can't quite believe that Archie Hicox and Hugo Stiglitz have actually died. They were major players in the film and to have them get brushed aside in a matter of seconds - so easily, without glamour or even recognition - is something I don't feel quite ready to accept! A fantastic scene from Mr Tarantino but devastatingly crushing for the audience!
