First-time French director Julia Ducournau’s coming-of-age cannibal horror stars newcomer Garance Marillier as Justine – a devout vegetarian attending veterinary school alongside her older sister Alexia, who is horrified to learn one of her college’s hazing rituals involves eating raw rabbit liver, and even more horrified when this awakens inside her an insatiable hunger for meat that extends to human flesh too.

In one scene Alexia is helping Justine through another rite of passage – her first bikini wax – when the wax gets stuck on Justine’s leg. While trying to cut off the offending glob with a pair of scissors Alexia accidentally chops off her own finger in the process before promptly passing out.

As Justine rushed to put the errant digit on ice, she’s overtaken by the urge to devour her sister’s severed finger and that’s exactly what she does. And there was us thinking frogs’ legs and escargot were as weird as French cuisine gets.
