12 Most Dark And Twisted Movie Scenes Of 2018

5. That Car Twist - Hereditary

Hereditary Car Scene
A24

Hereditary is a film that's designed to disturb you. It's not so much scary as it is full of horrifying imagery that will lodge itself in your brain and never leave, but the car scene takes that to a whole new level and then some.

Writer/director Ari Aster masterfully builds to the scene, starting from the party where it becomes apparent something is going to go wrong. And when Charlie begins having an allergic reaction, with her brother Peter having to frantically drive her to the hospital, you THINK that's the worst of it. She'll be fine, right? She'll get to the hospital just in time? At most, you think that maybe Charlie will die from the reaction itself.

It takes a bold movie to make you wish the young girl had died because of peanuts, but that's what Hereditary does in this moment. Instead, we have to watch as she leans her head out of the window, gasping for air, viewers feeling as desperate as she is, before, well, she's decapitated.

It's a twist as incredible as it is awful, going against everything we know, and not even giving the scream time to leave your throat. It's not only the visual that's disturbing, nor the fact of what's happened. It's that, from then onwards, you've completely lost all sense of control.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
