12 Most Dark And Twisted Movie Scenes Of 2018

4. Pregnant Bullying - Climax

Climax Movie
A24

Climax is not subtle in its foreshadowing. The entire movie is divided into two pretty distinct halves: a relatively normal party where a dance group air their grievances and get to know each other over endless cups of Sangria, and a descent into hell after everyone realise said Sangria has been spiked with a potent form of LSD.

Consequently, when one of the characters announces a secret pregnancy minutes before the drug starts to kick in, you just know that information is going to be abused by a bunch of horrible people off their nuts. Paranoia and hysteria quickly sets in once everyone realises they've been drugged, with the suspicion landing firmly on this one character, who wasn't drinking because of her pregnancy.

Nobody believes that's the reason she abstained from the punch though, and accuse her of spiking it. As threats grow into full-blown violence, she's kicked in the stomach, immediately doubling over, with panic visible on her face that she might have lost her baby. Nobody else bats an eye though, and a gang of 20 people continue to accuse her, screaming obscenities in her face to the point where she begins to mutilate her own body with a knife, to the growing amusement of the crowd.

Even though there are far bloodier scenes to choose from throughout Climax (any of which could have made it onto this list), it's how claustrophobic, oppressive and inescapable the situation seems that makes it so twisted, along with the glee the gang are taking in seeing an expecting mother sacrificing her own body for their entertainment.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
