Why It's Desperate: It's a movie about legendary news anchor Dan Rather and producer Mary Mapes' departure from CBS News following the airing of inaccurate documents criticising George Bush (in lefty-liberal Hollywood, that's strike one). Oh, and Rather is played by Oscar-winner Robert Redford (strike two), while Mapes by Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett (strike three). Will It Succeed?: Absolutely not. Though Redford and Blanchett were largely praised for their work, the film is itself compromised by its excessive, heavy-handed political slant, and on the whole the pic is regarded as a fairly by-the-numbers docudrama without the texture and complexity needed to graduate to awards success.
