12 Most Disappointing Movies From Summer 2016

9. Independence Day: Resurgence

X-Men Apocalypse
20th Century Fox

The Buzz: While nobody was expecting something that totally lived up to the original, Resurgence still looked like Roland Emmerich destruction porn at its finest: cheesy, visually gorgeous and surprisingly self-aware ("they love to get the landmarks"). Oh, and Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman are in it, which is endorsement enough.

What We Got: Sure, the big-scale destruction is entertaining and Goldblum in particular brings his amusing eccentricity to proceedings, but almost every young, new character is a colossal bore, it takes far too long to get going, there are some pointless Asian characters thrown in for the sake of the Chinese market, and Emmerich blows several potentially iconic moments by not building them up enough (namely a certain death scene).

Embarrassingly it also sets up a third film that may not even happen given the movie's fairly so-so box office haul so far.
