12 Most Hopeless Sci-Fi Movie Endings

9. Planet Of The Apes (1968)

A Clockwork Orange
20th Century Studios

Planet Of The Apes was one of the first films that truly mastered the art of jaw-dropping endings and fantastical movie twists.

The movie centers around astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) who crashes onto an unknown planet after a light-speed voyage. After a lot of strange noises, creepy rustlings in the bushes, and a group of mute humans, George is exposed to the real rulers of the planet, the apes.

George soon realizes that things are a little different here than back home. He founds out that humans are hunted, enslaved or used for experiments and it is the apes that take the positions of hunters, doctors, teachers, and archeologists. One ape, Dr. Zaius, takes an interest in George and routinely explains why the world is how it is in a way that George fails to understand.

In the end, George manages to escape and makes his way to the shoreline. It is here where he discovers the remains of the Statue of Liberty, thus revealing that the ape planet was earth all along! Bet you didn't see that coming.

It suddenly becomes clear that Dr. Zaius had pretty much explained this to George beforehand. Earth turned into the ape world after a long and menacing nuclear war that condemned humanity forever. Dr. Zaius makes it clear that the stupidity of humans is to blame and that if they were a little bit smarter this whole thing would have never happened.
