2. Cabin In The Woods – The Whiteboard
Easily the most subversive horror in recent memory, Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods was a refreshing and funny take on tired horror tropes about a secret organisation that arranges annual blood sacrifices of trope-worthy characters to appease ancient, evil gods lest they annihilate mankind.
Early on in the movie, there’s a scene in which we see members of the secret organisation taking bets on a whiteboard regarding exactly which archetypal horror villain it will be that gets the teens that have gathered in the titular cabin.
It’s a veritable feast of horror antagonists from classic monsters like zombies, werewolves, vampires and witches to direct references to certain horror films in particular (note the Deadites and Angry Molesting Tree from Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead) and a few weird additions too like unicorns and dismemberment goblins.
Better yet, during the film’s finale we get to see each of the villains plastered on the white board in all their gory glory as they’re unleashed upon the secret facility and maim everyone in sight.
