8. Don’t Look Now – Supposedly Unsimulated Sex Scene
Nicolas Roeg’s creepy psychological horror is usually best remembered for two scenes: its shock ending when the childlike, red-hooded figure star Donald Sutherland keeps seeing turns out to be not the ghost of his dead daughter but a homicidal dwarf and secondly, its infamous sex scene between Sutherland and co-star Julie Christie.
It was a pretty graphic love scene for a mainstream film at the time and actually cut entirely by censors when the film was released in Ireland. While it’s definitely tame compared to some of the nudity and sex we see in horror movies today, it’s been immortalised in cinema history thanks to persistent rumours that Sutherland and Christie were going at it for real.
Ever since the scene has no doubt been re-watched, paused and painstakingly perved over frame-by-frame for proof that the sex is indeed unsimulated even though both Sutherland and the film’s producer Peter Katz have adamantly denied it.
