9. Cloverfield – Classic Creature Feature Frames
Director Matt Reeves’ 2008 sci-fi monster horror is a film positively brimming with Easter eggs anyway and the allure of the film only increased since the release of its ‘spiritual sequel’ 10 Cloverfield Lane last year.
A third instalment in the so-called Cloververse currently titled God Particle is set for release in 2018 will probably pique fan interest in the franchise once again, but until then there’s a few blink and you’ll miss it moments in the first Cloverfield to obsess over in the meantime.
As you’ll remember the movie was shot in a found footage, shaky handheld camera kind of way which allowed Reeves to get rather sneaky with some fleeting subliminal frames of monsters from classic creature features inserted throughout Cloverfield’s run. Look very, very closely and you’ll spot the ant monsters from Them!, the dinosaur from The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms and everybody’s favourite monster ape King Kong.
