7. Scream 4
Scream 3 almost killed Wes Craven’s finest franchise, suffering badly from the loss of screenwriter extraordinaire Kevin Williamson and leaning far too hard on the meta-humour the series had become famous for. So it was a surprise when the writer/ director combo announced their belated return in 2010 and provided a satisfying denouement to the quadrilogy before Craven’s untimely death in 2015.
Returning to Woodsboro and bringing back much of the original cast as well as an impressive ensemble of younger talent (Alison Brie! Hayden Panettiere! Adam Brody! Er… Rory Culkin?), the film was funny and self-aware without sacrificing the all-important scares.
Stuffed with memorable kills and a clever (non-cop out) killer reveal, the movie was a reminder of everything that made the series memorable. Offering a fittingly gruesome but surprisingly poignant ending to the franchise, Scre4m returned to the delicate balance of horror, humour, and heart which elevated the first two films to iconic status.
Now if we could all only forget the misjudged MTV series a few years later (?)…
