12 Most Rewatchable Movie Sequels Of All Time
5. The Mummy Returns
Stephen Sommers’ summer blockbuster was a delightful surprise when it debuted in 1999. A scary, funny, thrilling blast, the film was carried both by Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz’s easy chemistry and its showcase of then-innovative FX which brought the eponymous monster to terrifying life.
A madcap adventure, The Mummy’s success seemed impossible to repeat when the inevitable sequel surfaced in 2001, a mere two years after the first. However, despite the odds, The Mummy Returns held onto the charming cheekiness of the first film, deepening the loveable characters whilst also introducing new and exciting villains among the many chases and impressive action sequences.
The franchise may have been derailed by the time its belated third instalment was released in 2008, sans Weisz who wisely steered clear of the Jet-Li-starring final film, but this first sequel nonetheless remains an encapsulation of everything which made the first film so likeable.
If only the ill-fated grimdark 2017 remake had the same good sense to stick to corny fun….
