12 Most Underrated 2000s Sci-Fi Movies

4. The Fountain

The 6th Day
Warner Bros.

Possibly the most ambitious flick to come from the lens of the great/ terrible creator of Black Swan and mother! (how is this the same person), Darren Aronofsky’s 2006 epic sci-fi The Fountain stars Hugh Jackman as—well, as various incarnations of the same protagonist throughout history, in a vast and romantic series of stories whose intersections illuminate essential truths about life, humanity, and love.

Told you it was ambitious.

Sure, not everything in this visually sumptuous but occasionally hard to follow philosophical treatise meets sci-fi adventure works perfectly. But there’s more to think about in a few minutes of this ambitious vision than the entirety of the overrated “drugs=bad” misery-fest of Requiem for a Dream, and the film benefits from a career-best turn from Rachel Weisz.
