12 Most Underrated Movies Of 2017

3. It Comes At Night

It Comes At Night
Universal Pictures

Maybe it was the misleading marketing that touted it as a straight-up, jump scare-heavy horror movie or perhaps in a year that gave us such critically acclaimed horrors as Get Out, It and Mother! it was somewhat eclipsed by more visible genre movies but the lack of love this last year for Trey Edward Shults’ post-apocalyptic horror It Comes at Night was baffling.

While critics were quick to praise the movie, it failed to connect with many audiences who gave it a rather unimpressed D grade on CinemaScore. It’s fair enough being miffed when you’re expecting a spooky, straightforward horror but instead you get a slow-burner whose scares are more psychological but it’s a shame moviegoers didn’t give it more of a chance.

Though the scares are low-key, It Comes at Night is nevertheless an effective, unnerving and nightmarish little horror that makes great use of mounting paranoia and dread as two families attempt to survive in a world ravaged by a mysterious virus.

Maybe not quite the horror people were expecting but still a solid, genuinely scary entry into the genre.
