3. Batman Saves Martha - Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice

Black Mask Ewan McGregor
Warner Bros. Pictures

There is a very good reason why this memorable scene became so immemorable, and that is because of the disastrous moment that preceded it. The notorious "Save Martha" moment was such a stinker that it was hard to invest in the scene which immediately followed, in which Batman actually does save Martha. It's a great shame, because this scene was an absolute cracker.

The ethos of refusing to kill anyone may be gone, but the scene still works as a wonderful exploration of what makes Batman such a great hero. The combination of gadgetry and high quality fighting skills makes our hero an unstoppable threat, despite being significantly outnumbered. Full credit must go to Affleck, whose training for the role really pays off in this scene, bringing a brilliant physicality to the role.

The scene is an indication of what could have been with a more grounded approach, the realistic combative style of action on display here exactly what the audience is after in a Batman film. The vigilante style violence would have been brilliant in a standalone Affleck Batman movie, that unfortunately will never happen now. One can only hope that the Robert Pattinson lead film next year will be use this scene as a template for its action scenes.
