The jury is still out as to the quality of the latest DCEU film entry, and there are certainly some doubts as to just how viable future Birds of Prey films will be considering the mixed reviews and moderate box office returns of the first movie of the potential franchise. There can be little doubting though that Dinah Lance, aka Black Canary, is a character we definitely wish to see a lot more of.

While much of the praise that did come for the Birds of Prey movie was largely directed towards the whacky fight sequences and Margot Robbie's usual energetic performance, it was Dinah Lance's character arc that was by far the most engaging. There was a genuine sense of a character trying to find her way, forced into working with villains, making questionable decisions along the way, before finally displaying her true colours.

Full credit must go to the screenwriters and actor Jurnee Smollett-Bell, who together brought the character's journey to life. Smollett-Bell displays the inner conflict very much building inside her character, while credit must go the screenwriters for never allowing Dinah Lance an easy way out. The ability to take us on a journey with Black Canary makes her heroic final actions something to really sing about.
