12 Most Underrated Things In DCEU Movies

8. Jai Courtenay's Captain Boomerang - Suicide Squad

There were many strong casting decisions in the first Suicide Squad movie, with Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Viola Davis receiving deserved praise. While Jared Leto's Joker and Cara Delevingne's Enchantress proved to be more of an acquired taste, Jai Courtenay's wonderfully hilarious rendition of Captain Boomerang is one that largely slipped under the radar.

Courtenay had a string of poor lead up performances to this film that didn't exactly inspire much enthusiasm here, most notably in the critically panned Terminator Genisys and A Good Day to Die Hard. Where as Courtenay came across as rather dour in those films, he more than makes up for it here, playing a beer swilling thief with some major anger management issues with a tonne of energy and humour. Courtenay perfectly depicts a character who you could either have a great night on the town with or be beaten to a pulp by, all depending on his mood at the time.

Some of Captain Boomerang's best moments come in some of the film's more frustrating points, especially with Courtenay's more nuanced humour. This is typified by the scene in which Slipknot is introduced and then promptly killed, a frustratingly brief character arc that should have been expanded or just left out. Having prompted the character to try and make an escape before being killed, Captain Boomerang's reaction is a hoot, a semi apologetic smirk and shrug of the shoulders bringing some much needed dark humour to the scene.
